Dear ITASA Community,

With 2.5 weeks remaining in many of the earliest voter registration deadlines, the Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Students Association (ITASA) is embarking on an aggressive and last push Voter Registration Drive to register Taiwanese American and Asian American college students.

College students are an important demographic in this year's elections, which include races ranging from President/Vice President to State Judgeships to various state Propositions. In the past, the 18-24 year old demographic has been documented as one who is apathetic despite composing a significant part of the "eligible" voting population. In the 2004 Presidential Elections, only 47% of college-aged voters who were eligible to cast a vote actually cast a ballot in the election. Among Asian Americans, the percentage could be even lower and we intend to help change that. Even more fascinating about Asian Americans is how equally split Asian Americans are in their party identification. In a 2006 national exit poll, Asian Americans were found to be 35% Democratic, 27% Republican, and a noteworthy 33% independent. Though Asian Americans are still only 5% of the US population, the smallest of margins will determine competitive Presidential states especially in the Mountain West and surely Asian Americans will be part of the undecided being wooed by various campaigns, making this specific demographic an important bloc in this year's elections.

There are no statistics related to Taiwanese American college voters, but our goal is to increase voter participation in order to empower young people, Asian Americans, and Taiwanese Americans in the United States. With more voter participation, the government could be revolutionized and the debate on issues/policies more focused towards what young people and specifically towards what young Asian Americans/Taiwanese Americans care about. Empowerment, leadership, and good citizenship are key tenets to the ITASA mission and what a great time to do this in a key era in US politics.

With your help, we want to register unregistered and eligible Taiwanese American college students.
